Operation Overlord II :Prelude
Intro to the large Operation Overlord 2, Part 1
by John Tinney

Phoenix Lancer Hiring Offices, Harlech Hall, Outreach 7 March, 3058

Colonel Trebor Rolyat sat at his desk as was thoughtful as the current news played across his terminal's screen. Over the past few days, reports of an invasion of Terra had surfaced and it was rumored that the Word of Blake had initiated it with the coerced help of the 21st Centari Lancers, a highly respected unit. It appeared that the attack was an act of desperation, akin to betting all on a turn of a card.

Some bet.

Trebor already had a good idea on the implications of the attack. For one it signaled for certain that Comstar was not the omnipotent force it had always made itself to be. Two, it was a dangerous situation for the people of the Inner Sphere, for Terra was the home of much knowledge and support for several realms, notably the Free Rasalhague Republic which relied on the Terran arms factories to rebuild its armies. The third thing was something that dated back some 270 years, to the time of his very great great-grandfather, to the time of Exodus.

He went to a small safe and pulled out a few items, among them a small document keeper of a type not seen often out side major archives. Taking the items to his desk, he sat down and began to work; he knew when the word came, there would be little time for hunting the missing.

Two days passed before a messenger came. "Colonel, there is a Comstar Precentor out here to see you." Called his secretary. "She has an important message for you."

"Send the Precentor in. I have been expecting her."

His office door opened and admitted the Precentor. She was a raven-haired woman of medium height and dressed in the official garb of her order. "Greetings, Colonel; my name is Precentor Julianna Mattewson; if I understood you correctly out there, you have been expecting me?"

"Yes I have." Trebor stood and motioned her to a seat. "It pertains to a document you carry and a copy I have of it that is 270 years old." He walked to the liquor cabinet and turned. "Can I get you something?"

"Yes, thank you. A scotch and water." She sounded puzzled. "You are aware of what I carry then?"

Trebor poured the drink and walked back to his chair. Handing Mattewson her drink, he pulled open a draw and removed a document keeper.

"Quite aware. My father explained this document to me when I became old enough to understand it, as his father did for him. I had been told that they may come a time when Comstar" he flipped open the book to the copy, " would come and activate the contract. As word got out of the invasion, I immediately began preparing for its activation. There is not many of us left, you know."

The Precentor smiled. "I know. The document I have has an addendum on it; it names you as the overall commander of the operation and gives you the power to hire on replacements to fill out the gaps. There were a few hires in the last couple years, but none large. As far as we can tell, you will need at least 10 more regiments to have a chance. Think it is possible?"

Trebor became thoughtful. "Yes, I think so. There are a few units on Outreach that I would hire. I will put out the feelers after this meeting. Who has signed on recently?

"3 units- one of which is a reinforced combined arms battalion. Kavanagh's Killers, the Riders of Destiny and Pendragon's Swords. KK is a strengthened company, the Riders are a light scout/raider unit of company strength and the combined arms formation is the Swords."

"I know of the Swords; good unit. Where are the others?"

Kavanagh is on Outreach, under a new command, the Riders are in transit to Tukayyid, and the Swords are on their way here.

Trebor nodded. "I guess I had better get started. Who will be my contact with Comstar and ROM?

The Precentor stood as she got ready to leave. "I am." She handed him the documents she carried. "This is the papers giving you authority to hire for the mission. There is no real cap on expenditures; just an admonishment to use the funds wisely."

"That I will"
