RGM Story, The
A short story about the history of Rec.Games.Mecha

Scene:
This is the world of USENET. A thriving chaotic world with thousands of cities. Some cities have strong walls of moderation, others have powerful guards to defend them, yet others have no defenses at all. Some cities are tightly controlled dictatorships, others bastions of free thought, others all but dead, strangled with the weight of spam and still more fighting the good fight. Let us take a look at one of these cities, Rec.Games.Mecha. This proud city housed many a great poster with a large population that lurked in the shadows. This city was not perfect, there have been battles, flames, and invasions. But the city survived. Survived to be a haven for people who like to blow up things with illogical and fanciful war machines. Then, came the attacks. First one, then many. Launched from deep space where the coward hid from the wrath of the cities defenders. RGM was not the only city attacked, no this coward attacked many helpless cities all over the planet. The attacks where not only launched against the cities, but against some of their most famous citizens, in an attempt to destroy them.
Now, most of the city of RGM lays in ruins. But still, some its citizens stay. Gears, Mecha, Battlemechs and Destroids can still be seen prowling the ruins. But they are few, for only the strong and the foolish have stayed. Many citizens have retreated into shelters to wait out the bombing or to await the death of the city. Many other citizens have left for good, never to return. The ruined hulks of their mecha left behind to rust. But all is not lost, the defenders of the city and those of other cities hunt the coward. With vengeance in their hearts, weapons in hand and the promises of terrible punishment on their lips. These hunters may bring the coward his just rewards. But Listen! The sounds of the bombing become dim. The attack has faded to a mere shadow of its former power. Slowly a few citizens come forth from their bunkers. "Is it over?" they ask "or is it a lull in the storm?"
The storm is indeed over. But the battle goes on. As the citizens crawl forth from the bunkers to rebuild the city, spammers, meowers and other vermine also come forth. The call for Moderation is made. And the response is a Yes! The walls of moderation are being raised. The RGM Warship "Moderator" takes position in orbit over the rebuilding city. The "Moderator" will help guard against new attacks and with the strong city walls, RGM will be all but immune from outside attack. But the city must still watch for internal conflicts, for they can destroy the city as certainly as the "Thor" Binary Bombs that caused such devastation.
But the question remains, who are the coward or cowards. Was it the Terran Overlord Tovernment?(TOG), The Zentraedi?, Clan Wolverine?, Mike Enlow? We do not know as yet, but someday we shall. In the meantime Rec.Games.Mech. will grow and prosper. And so may we all. |
