Pirates have an unnaturally bad day

"SHIT! ALL of his ammo must have gone off!" Condord though as he desperately turned his mech to bear on what had killed the Whitworth and its pilot.
Condord called out "Enemy to the rear! Enemy to the rear!"
It took several moments for Condord's sensors to lock on the the new foe. A single Warhammer stood in the middle of the pass the pirate mechs had crossed not two minutes before.
"How the hell did it get behind us?" Condord thought and ordered at the same time "Kill that thing NOW!"
Six mechs fire converged on the Warhammer, but little struck it. Unnerved by the sudden death of the Whitworth and the unexpected appearance of the Warhammer, the pirates fire was inaccurate. The Warhammer did not seem to have any problems with accuracy. It fired both of its PPC's at the Rifleman. The first bolt hit the center torso of the mech and destroyed nearly half of the armor there. The second PPC bolt totally destroyed the Rifleman's head.
Condord let off a string of curses as the Rifleman collapsed to the ground.
Again the Pirate mechs fire slashed at the Warhammer. More of it struck this time, but it did not seem to have much effect on the Warhammer. The Warhammer strode forward, again firing both of its PPC's. Both shots struck the same place on the targeted mech. The right leg of the pirate Panther was cut into two pieces and the mech fell to the ground. It thrashed for a moment and as Condord watched, the ejection system went off.
"NO! You IDIOT!" Condord screamed as the Panther pilot was turned into a 10 meter long smear on the ground by the jets on the ejection seat.
Apparently happy with his current location, the Warmer did not move as again the twin PCP's flared to life as the fire from the 4 remain Pirate mechs centered on it. Armor was being blown off the Warmer, but Condord instinctively knew that it was not enough to put the heavy mech down.
Condor's own MAD was starting to have serious heat problems now after the firing both his PPC's and autocannon continually. "If I'm running hot, that damn "Hammer is going to be getting hot too." Of course Condord forgot the possibility that the Warhammer had the improved double heatsinks.
The Warhammer's return fire had blasted the Trebuchet which had closed to use its medium lasers when the LRM ammo had run out. The Trebuchet had scored with only a single medium laser. In return it took 4 times that amount of damage as two PPC's burned into the already damaged armor. All armor was removed from the medium mechs left leg and reduced to nearly nothing over the center torso.
Condord could see in his head what was going to happen and screamed into his mic "Johnson! Get your mech out of there!"
It did little good. Johnson back the mech up as fast as he could, but not fast enough. The Warhammer suddenly broke from its standing position and advanced on the Trebuchet. The Treb pilot desperately fired his medium lasers at the Warhammer and was rewarded with a pair of hits. The Pirate Blackjack which was now closer to the Warhammer than the Trebuchet was and scored with its medium lasers and a light autocannon round. Condord was only able to fire his autocannon, which missed while Gondor's Griffin scored with a PPC shot to the Warhammers center torso.
But the damage was not enough to save the Trebuchet. For the first time the Warhammer used its SRM's and medium lasers and fired a single PPC for good measure. The Trebuchet fell. its gyro destroyed and engine damaged. Johnson managed to eject safely before the mech fell, landing 120 meter behind the Blackjack.
The Blackjack pilot realizing that that she was going to be the next target for the Warhammer, jumped away from the heavy mech. Condord screamed in fury as the Blackjacks jumpjets incinerated the Trebuchet pilot as the medium mech landed.
Unfortunately for the Blackjack pilot she had been unable to jump far enough away. The Warhammer run up next to the medium mech and delivered a powerful kick to the smaller mechs left leg. The kick shattered all of the remaining armor on the leg, leaving it vulnerable to the weapons fire that erupted from the Warhammer. Two machine guns, two small lasers, 3 missiles from the SRM pack struck the 45 ton mech. One missile, one machine gun and a medium laser struck the exposed left leg, while the other weapons chewed up armor on other sections of the mech. The damage to the left leg proved more than the Blackjack could take and the the mech crashed to the ground. But before it fell it lashed out with its own weapons. Four medium lasers burned off armor in different locations finally opening gaps in the Warhammers armor. Gaps that where exploited by a flight of LRM's from Gondor's Griffin. The Warhammers left farm dropped to the ground. A PPC bolt and autocannon round from Condord missed totally.
When the Blackjack hit the ground it, hit face first, and rolled partway over on its side. With the optical enhancement on his mech Condord could see that that the Blackjacks cockpit windows had changed color. They where now a bright red color.
"Blood Red" Condors thought idly. But that was thought was something in the back of his mind. He was shocked that this one mech had destroyed so much, and now it coming after him.
Slowly the Warhammer turned towards its last two enemies, but it seemed different somehow, familiar. If it looked familiar to Condord, Gondor recognized it. In twenty years Condord had never heard panic in the voice of his second in command, but he heard it now.
"No! You DEAD! We killed you!"
The Warhammer raised its remaining PPC and almost causally fired. The PPC burned through the already savaged right torso armor of the Griffin, and found the LRM ammunition stored there. It was the strangest ammo explosion Condord would ever see. The LRM ammo did not so much explode as burn its way from inside the mech. One large tendril of flame emerged from inside the Griffins cockpit. tearing through the top of the mechs head like a living thing and consuming all before it.
Condord had not paid to much attention to his companions death. He was to busy trying to save his own life. Gondor's last panicky fire had missed the Warhammer, Condor's did not. The autocannon had hit the Hammer's right arm, a PPC struck the left torso laying bear the internal structure, and the other PPC hit the right leg, giving the Warhammer a limp.
Condors marveled at the Warhammer. By all right the mech should be in pieces on the ground, but it still kept fighting. The heat level should have beyond the point of shutdown and a glance of the IR monitor confirmed that. The mechs was almost glowing with the heat. But it still kept moving!
Condord fired again at the Warhammer. A single PPC and the autocannon ripped what little armor remained and destroyed internal structure on the Warhammer. "I am NOT going to get overheated with that .. thing coming after me."
Condord's weapons had hit the Warhammer, and the Warhammer struck back with its PPC, SRM and medium lasers. The lasers scored armor on either torso, the SRM missiles a created four new rents in the armor in different places one lucky enough to damage the mechs gyro. And the PPC burned though armor to destroy actuators on the 75 ton mechs right leg.
Condord fought to keep his mech standing but was unable to. It crashed to the ground, knocking Condord around inside the cockpit. Condord shook his head to clear it as the Warhammer limped closer. Condord tried in vain to try to stand as the Warhammer slowly approached. For some reason the 70 ton mech did not fire, it just kept and walking. Condors glanced at the Warhammer, but could not believe his eyes as he thought he saw flames inside the Warhammer though rents in its armor. "Must have been hit harder on the head than I though" Condord muttered.
Finally Condord was able to make his mech stand, and the Warhammer was now only 30 meters way. With all his speed Condord brought all his weapons to bear and fired them at point blank rage into the Warhammer. As Condord screamed "DIE!" his world exploded into flame. |
