Free Worlds League
8 August 3064
The young blonde woman put her hands on her hips, looking out the ceiling-to-floor, full-length window. The sun was in the process of setting; casting pinks, oranges, and purples across the sky and few visible clouds. Her starch-white lab coat bore the name of DeBlois Genetic Technologies; a well respected but little known genetics laboratory, above the left breast pocket. Over the right breast pocket was embroidered her identification: Tezra Alexander, Chief Genetics Specialist.
On the other side of Tezra's office stood a man to be in his early 40's, with gray streaks attempting to creep out at his temples. He was standing behind a chair for guests to the office, his hands resting on the chair's backrest. His nametag identified him as Assistant Chief Genetics Specialist William Allen Sr. Tezra turned to face the Assistant Chief, "I don't know Bill, this could have irreversible effects. You're talking about taking a usually docile animal, and turning it into a killing machine." Tezra's blue eyes flashed their doubtful expressions to William.
The older scientist combed his hand through his short, brown hair, irritated that Tezra wasn't going along with him, "Think about it, Tez. We could be saving human beings from the ravages of war, by sending these creatures in their places."
"Well at least Free Worlds League personnel." Tezra countered. "You know I have friends right over the border, in the Lyran Alliance Armed Forces," Emphasizing that her friends may one day face these creatures.
Allen sighed, "I understand that. But just think, if you were in a military unit, and you saw these creatures running torwards you, would you stick around and fight?"
Alexander glared at him incredulously, "Bill, with the way you are talking, any troops that would face these animals wouldn't have a chance to run! They'd gobble them up, whole!"
William Allen Sr. sighed again. He was running out of defenses for his project. As he walked around the desk, to take a look outside for himself, he fired away, "Tezra, if any opposition knew that these animals were in the area, their commanders would be stupid to send their troops out, plus if the troops knew, they'd probably refuse to deploy."
Tezra thought for a few minutes, looking out across the genetics facility's rear courtyard. The perimeter was ringed with electrified fencing and barbed wire, and was also patrolled by sentries armed with single-shot, shoulder-fired Light Anti-Armor Rockets and Short-Range Missiles. In the dusk hour, she could see the hint of blue-white that glowed from the 20,000 volts coursing through the wires. A dark-blue uniformed sentry saw the two scientists standing at the full-length, reinforced windows. He adjusted his tubular weapon, to give them a wave. Tezra smiled and waved back, while Bill smiled and nodded. Beyond the sentry, out into the forest that surrounded the compound, a Gaiusar Red Pine tree shook lazily then fell. A low roar sounded.
Tezra shook her head slightly, "What about rear areas, like hospitals and just plain support troops who are considered non-combatants?"
Bill was at a loss for words. He continued staring out the window, into the thick jungle as his mind worked the cranks for an answer.
"Hopefully, they will be far in the rear area. We can pre-deploy some friendly troops with tranquilizer guns or something, to keep them in a certain area."
Alexander looked over to the Assistant Chief, "And how many troops would you want any commander to deploy, just to keep these creatures on a leash? Don't you think they would be needed elsewhere?"
"Tezra, if that commander knew what these creatures could do, to help in an objective, I'm sure he would fine some troops from somewhere."
"So now we'll have to train troops in handling these creatures, as well, huh?"
"It will be worth it. If we can save lives from the ravages of war, it will be well worth it."
"OK, what about the creatures themselves? If we give life to them, it doesn't matter? They still have a life, and have certain rights. Just like the canines used in ancient Terra's world wars; these creatures will be used for the same thing."
"Tez, please don't get animal-lover on me. These creatures will be cared and looked after, by professionals trained by DeBlois personnel. We just need the 'OK' from you. We will design these creatures to certain specifications; we will design a tranquilizer to keep these creatures on a leash; and we will design a training program for personnel to keep these creatures under control."
Picturing in her mind, about what Bill had said, Tezra finally spoke, "OK Bill. We'll do this, BUT, in limited numbers. We are NOT going to make a whole army of these things," Tezra pointed a finger at Bill.
Bill smiled, then pointed a finger back at Tezra, "Yes! Tezra you won't regret it."
With that, William Allen Senior almost ran into the office's partially-opened door, as he ran out to get the project started.
Tezra turned to watch as another Red Pine fell, "I think I already have."
