Operation Overlord II Massive fanfiction about the retaking of Terra from the WoB by Collective of Authors |

Hilton Head Island, Terra 4 March, 2784
General John Rolyat looked out over the inland bay at the remaining devastation. Sighing, he turned back to his jeep and driver. "Time to go back sergeant. I've made my decision on the mission asked of us that are staying."
The driver looked to him as he started the jeep and began to drive. "May I ask what your choice was, sir?"
Rolyat smiled grimly as he replied. "The Lancers are staying and protecting Terra. Blake needs the protection that we, and who ever else took Kerensky's offer, can give. I have no idea what Burns and Aterides are going to decide for their men but I have made my choice; a choice I think is worth making." Looking over at his driver, he asked. "Any thing you have to say on this?"
The sergeant frowned as he swerved to avoid a road crew. "I dunno, sir. I mean, if we do this and no one else does; what then? I am in favor of helping out, don't get me wrong- but I just want to know if it is just going to be us. Know what I mean, sir?"
"Yes I do, sergeant; yes I do."
Two hours later, Rolyat pulled up in front of a comm-center serving as Jerome Blake's office and a meeting place for a select few. As the jeep came to a stop, an older black man came out of the building along with a few other individuals, notably the General Staff rep from Kerensky.
"I didn't realize I was that important. What gives?"
The black officer replied with a smile. "While you were out woolgathering, we more or less decided to do it. What about you?"
"We are."
"Good. That means there is now ten major units remaining to take the contract. Ours, the 31st Dragoons, 42nd Marines, 551st Striker, 965th Royal Lancers, 21st Ops group, 1st Armored, 100th Aerospace regiment and the 101st Battlemech Division".
"Wow."
"I know. General Kerensky asked all of the units that stayed to defend Terra, but only those I mentioned have decided to make the pledge."
Rolyat considered this. "Where do we all plan on being? On Terra or nearby?"
This time, the rep spoke. "Where ever you wish. All that is asked is that you be in a position to come to Terra's aid."
"I think we can do that; am I right General Burns?" Rolyat smiled as his mind contemplated survival for the unit.
The older black man chuckled. "Yes, General; I think we can. Logistics and Financing are going to be hell, though."
Aterides spoke. "This is quite true. I figure my Royals are going to be broke rather quick unless I take an offer from a House Lord. Allah knows I don't want to, but the Comstar stipend will not be enough for an entire brigade, much less a division." Aterides stopped to light a cigarette then continued. "I am taking the Royals in to Cappellan space to find them a job. Where are the rest of you going?"
Rolyat considered this for a moment. "We have gotten an offer from the Federated Suns and from the League; I am leaning toward the Feds though. Frank?
General Burns contemplated this as well. "We are going to the Combine. A portion of my troops hails from there and they have made an offer of substantial size. Them or the Lyrans, anyway. What about you, 'Jarhead'? You decide yet?"
The youngish marine general laughed. "Yeah ya old goat- the Lyrans. They made an offer just before I left to come here. It is a good one and I'd be an idiot not to take it. I know at least two of the others are going to the Feds and the 21st is staying here. As for the remaining ones, your guess is as good as mine."
The rep looked at the marine officer. "General Falkenburg, how do you know this? Their decisions have not been officialized yet."
Falkenburg gazed right back. "I have a good friendship with the commander of the 21st and he told me. I also know the 101st is going to the periphery as a 'sit and watch' unit."
"I see"
"I really wouldn't worry about it- anyone who wants to know where we are, for the most part, only has to look." Falkenburg smiled. "All I did was ask."
"Hmph"
Rolyat spoke again, looking at his watch. "Gentlemen, it has been real but I have a shuttle to catch to my laager point. I must go so if there is nothing else…."
"Nope."
"Nothing here."
"Ain't me- I gotta go myself before I miss my ride back to the billets."
The rep thought a second. "I have nothing else."
"Then it's decided. Gentlemen, I hope not to see you again after we depart Terra unless it is side by side against an invader." Trebor held out his hand and shook everyone else's. "May we never be needed."
"Amen" was the unified and quiet response. |
