Transient Compound A5, Harlech Spaceport, Harlech, Outreach

1721hrs, 12 April 3058

Ace got up from his desk and holstered his Python, settling it on his hip. Grabbing his jacket, he walked out of the office and towards the front door. His bodyguard was waiting for him there, expression neutral.

"Thought I told you were staying here Ryan," he commented as Ryan opened the door for him.

"Yes you did," he replied. "I do not agree with you going by yourself to see this Rolyat character, sir. You should bring someone along with you to watch your back."

"Like you, right?" Ace grinned at the younger man. "If this guy wanted to do me harm, there's not a damn thing bringing you would stop. From what I have been able to glean from intel, he is a stand-up kinda guy; very professional, quite driven and from what I hear, fair. Don't worry, Ok?"

"It's my job, sir," Ryan said with a straight face. "It's what the Citizens pay me for."

Ace chuckled. "I know Ryan, I know." He walked outside into the light drizzle. Ryan followed him out. "I will be fine; I promise. I should be back in a few hours..." His voice trailed off as he noticed that his car wasn't outside. "Ok; where is it?"

"I haven't had it brought around yet, sir. I was going to but I felt I had to make sure you weren't going to need a driver."

Ace fixed his cousin with a hard stare. "Persistent little bastard, aren't you? Oh alright- you can come."

Ryan gave his general a small smile. "Thank you, sir." He then turned and went to get the car.

Lancer Compound, 29 kilometers NW of Harlech 1815hrs 12 April 3058

As the two men approached the estate, Ace checked his pocket comp. Verifying the numbers it contained, he closed it and observed the approaches to the main gate. The gate was a very plain affair, red brick and steel. Around it, the vegetation was cleared away for five meters. Ace noted the professionalism of the gate guards and was duly impressed. He almost missed the guards backup- a pair of what appeared to be elemental hidden under a fir and netting. As Ryan drove the car toward the main building, He continued to watch the surroundings. Not noting any other defenses, he consoled himself by the fact that he nearly missed the clanner suits, which meant that there was more defenses than was apparent. Ryan pulled up to the front of the house as an elderly man of roughly 60 came out, dressed in what appeared to be Star League style fatigues. The man came down the grand porch stairs and met them as they got out.

"Welcome to Phoenix Roost, General Barton," the man said. "I am Colonel Rolyat. It is a pleasure to meet you"

"The pleasure is mine, Colonel." Ace responded, shaking Trebor's hand. "I had wondered who owned this section of land; beautiful horse country."

"That it is, sir. We got the land some 20 years ago, when the Dragoons got the world. They let us have it for a song, as long as we didn't turn it into a fortress. As you can see, "he waved his hand toward the barns, "we have appeared to have kept our bargain. Would you and your driver care for something to drink?"

Ace smiled and thought, This guy is genuinely a nice old guy or a crafty geezer. "Why, Thanks." Ace and Ryan followed Trebor into the house. They followed him through to a large kitchen. There, Trebor got out some glasses and pulled out a clear bottle with a light brown liquid. Taking the proffered glasses, the two men each waited for their host. Trebor took his glass and motioned for the men to follow him.

"Let us get to business, General. You didn't come here to have an old man give you a tour." He led them to a wall and pressed a panel. A section of wall slide aside and Trebor led them in and down a staircase. The stair let out in a meeting room which contained a large screen. Motioning to the seats around the table, Trebor grabbed a small controller. and began to speak. "General, before we begin I have two questions. The first- can your guard keep his mouth closed, and two- is there a name I may call you other than 'General'?"

Ace chuckled as Ryan's face turned into one of astonishment and a measure of anger. "Relax Ryan. I understand his question; he's concerned that you may discuss this with those who may not. I can assure you, Trebor," he said as Ryan glowered from his seat, drink untouched. "Ryan isn't the type to shoot his off mouth. I trust him enough to bring him. And those I befriend call me Ace, sir." He smiled. "That is only reserved for a few."

"Fair enough." Trebor hit a button on the controller. The screen came to life with an image of the Terran solar system. "Let me begin by telling you the target of our plans- Terra. The Word of Blake has, as you know, invaded and captured Earth from Comstar forces on planet. From what has been determined, the WoB hit earth with approximately seven divisions of troops-half conventional forces, against what amounted to a division and a half, plus the assorted guard units and cadets from academies which added up to maybe another regiment or two.

In a period of 6 days, the Word of Blake overwhelmed the defenders that weren't ambushed or hit by what is now known as The Shadow Lancers; a WoB unit that masqueraded as the 21st Centari Lancers." Trebor flashed several pictures on the screen; the scenes showed the devastation at Salinas, Kansas and various Comguard sites- including the massacre at Sandhurst. "We are part of a Comstar contingency plan made many years ago for if the Earth ever fell. We were paid by Comstar, through various holding companies, a contingency contract for the reinforcement of Earth should an attempt be made by outside forces. Now our contract is in effect and we are coming up on full readiness for it. The offers made to you through Hauptman Kavanaugh, who should be here shortly, were made under the impression that you would accept working with us to free Terra from the clutches of the Blake troops. A contract is being drawn up for you, providing you accept of course. This invitation is being offered to you because several of the other units involved in the original contracts did not survive the passage of time.

"The original contracts were only offered to a few units because it was it was felt that Terra was relatively safe; but no one planned on the Clans. Now of the surviving regiments, two are too small- one only being company strength. This leaves only the Lancers, the Iron Jackals, the 10th Light Horse and the 555th Jump Regiment. The two small units will be participating in other operations crucial to the success of this operation, dubbed 'Operation Overlord II."

Trebor paused as a non-descript woman entered the room. She was clad in a gray jumpsuit with the rank of Precentor. Under the rank pin was a solid dark gray ribbon with two small black stars on it and on the rank was a small roman numeral ten. On her opposite collar she wore the greek letter rho. "Welcome Precentor Matthewson. Is the Hauptman on his way?

The Precentor smiled. "I'm afraid he will not be here; he is readying his unit and dependents to go to Centaurus. I hope this isn't a problem."

"Not at all, Precentor. I can relay the information to him."

Trebor told her. "Let's get down to the negotiation."

Meeting room, Lancer Compound 2125hours

As the meeting ended, Ace was quiet. He turned to face the Precentor and Trebor. "May I have a moment to think this out carefully? I really don't want to make a rash decision."

Trebor looked at Matthewson and she nodded. "I don't see why not; Take what time you need. We do need an answer before you leave tonight, though."

Ace nodded and made his way back up the stairs. Upon reaching the outside he pulled a cigar out of his jacket and lit it. Damn, he thought. This is got to be the biggest decision I am ever going to make. If I say yes, I am committing the Legion to a fight we have a good chance of losing. However, I cannot sit by idly and let Terra be decimated by those fanatics. He spent the better part of an hour thinking.

Ryan stood on the porch a short distance away. He knew from the body language Ace exhibited that a war was going on in his cousin's heart. What he didn't know was which side was winning.

Ace finally stopped his slow placing and took a deep breath. Going back inside, he met Trebor and the Precentor in the kitchen. "I've decided," he said as they both looked expectantly at him. "I have decided to join this 'crusade'; What are my objectives going to be?"

Trebor spoke. "Right now, no missions have been assigned. We are still gathering forces and hope to set everything in motion soon." Trebor walked over to him and offered his hand. "Glad to have you aboard, though. I sorry I can't walk you out- I have a few thing that have to be taken care of. The Precentor here will escort you out."

Ace and Ryan walked outside with her. As they went toward their car she called out. "I would you recommend you take this car over here; yours will not make it back" Ace and Ryan both turned at that. The implications of her statement hit Ace like a hammer.

Ace replied "I take it you rigged our car. I know it is a stupid question, but why?"

The Precentor shrugged. "Always remember," she said with a grim visage; "This mission is more important than any one person; if it leaks, the cost to those involved are much too great"
