Medical Crawler near Stark Hills
Tukayyid
19 May 3052

“Jerom’s Blood but this one is a real mess. You sure he’s still alive? Yeah, I see the readings. Put him over there for immediate medi-vac. What’s his story?”

The rescue medic glanced down at the shattered MechWarrior. “Found him under a big chunk of armor near his ‘Mech. He must have been there for hours.I guess he heard as at the top of the ridge and fired off his flare gun. But by the time we got our decent lines ready and reached the bottom he’d passed out. It was a bloody lucky thing he fired that flare. His wrecked ‘Mech was broadcasting static that was washing out the standard distress channels. We found him by chance on our final sweep through.”

“That’s one lucky bastard,” sighed the field doc. “Assuming we can get him to a field hospital in time. And he survives surgery.”

The doc surveyed the large pile of dark bags that lay together off to the side, then let her gaze sweep back over the pitifully few wounded they had recovered. Damn stinking Clanners. She’d never be able to support any organization that was willing to work alongside these butchering barbarians. Waverly had been mad to bargain with them. At least Focht had drawn a line in the sand and said we will capitulate no more. The cost had been horrid and growing worse. But they were slowly beating the Clanners back.

With no one else to take her time the doc turned back to see what she could do to stabilize this Quina kid. Ordinarily she’d have moved a case like his to the end of the triage line as not being worth the risk of loosing other patients whose chances were better. But they’d only recovered six wounded from the entire sector. The Ghost Bears had killed the rest.

Doctors had to learn to face death. To shut up their emotions and perform the hard work of saving what they could of twisted, battered bodies. Sandy was an excellent combat surgeon with many years of experience in the ways of the world. Yet as she thought of all the wounded killed where they lay she couldn’t keep the tears from her eyes. Not this one too she vowed. Not this one too.
