Mercy Rose Hospital Complex

“Good morning,” smiled the newcomer warmly. “I’m Doctor Paolo. I’m here to have a little chat with you if you don’t mind.”

“I don’t mind,” Terry rasped. His voice had only really returned yesterday. “They said you would be coming to check me out. Make sure I’m not on some sort of head trip after my ordeal.”

“Well,” Paolo admitted as he shifted gears, “I have to admit that’s true. I’m a psychiatric Doctor. And we do have to complete your evaluation.”

“ ‘S Okay Doc, I know you’re just doing your job. Regulations and all. But I’m going to be all right. For a while I was pretty messed up and I remember ignoring you when you first came to see me. Sorry ‘bout that. I had some stuff on my mind.”

“I see,” smiled Paolo. Although in fact the Doctor didn’t see at all. This Quina wasn’t fitting any of the usual profiles for a survivor case like this. “What’s that you’re working on?”

Terry glanced down at the noteputer. “Just letters.”

“To your family?”

“No. My Six-mates’. I know there was stuff they wanted to say before they got killed but didn’t have the chance. So I’m saying it for them. Can’t let your buddies down you know.”

The Doctor paused for a moment. Such an exercise could have good therapeutic value. There didn’t seem any reason to discourage him from the task. Something about the whole situation had given him goosebumps however. Still, his clinically trained mind couldn’t find anything that was a red flag indicating danger to the patient. Perhaps he had rushed into this too fast. At the moment Terry didn’t seem to be a danger to himself. Looking over the reports of the last three days before starting an evaluation might be the best thing to do at this point.

“No you certainly don’t want to let your unit pals down. In fact, if you don’t mind I’ll leave you to your task for a while. I have some calls to make and I’d like to review your case before starting a formal evaluation.

“No problem with me Doc. Catch you later.”

Terry turned back to his task of writing letters. At the door the Doctor paused.

“By the way, when I first walked by you were talking to somebody. Who was it?”

Terry glanced up at the Doctor with the faintest ghost of a grin on his lips.

“Nobody,” shrugged Terry. “Just my Guardian Angels.”

The wounded MechWarrior turned back to his work once again, dismissing the Doctor. Paolo looked about the empty room one last time as a slight frown formed on his face. Stepping out into the hall he looked towards the reception desk but it was empty. Checking the other way told him the hall was empty in that direction as well. With a hurumph the Doctor started towards
his office. For a brief moment he had had the distinct feeling that people were laughing at him. But it was obviously just is imagination. There wasn’t anyone else here.
