April Steiner-Focht watched the blue-brown ball of Tikonov shrink in the viewscreen as the Overlord-class DropShip Frederick Steiner burned a constant one gee toward the zenith jump point. In seventy-four hours they would rendezvous with the JumpShip Pride of Duran for the long journey home.
Below decks, the six remaining BattleMechs and the eight surviving MechWarriors were slowly getting back to whole -- under the watchful gaze and careful ministrations of Fritz Marsh. There was a lot of work to do - and trust to regain. But the work would get done and she would win back their trust. She owed it to them and to the memory of her parents.
Farther below decks, in a refrigerated storage locker, the nine bodies of lost family, friends, and comrades made their final journey home.
April scanned the star field - searching the tiny dots until she found the one she was looking for…New Avalon.
“I don’t know how,” she whispered to the distant star. “I don’t know when. But I will find you Victor Davion…and you will pay.” |
