Ghost Town
A look a r.g.m. today
by Solarmech

A figure approaches the gates of the City. Ever vigilant defense systems take note of him, but take no action. The automated system knows him of old and allows him to pass unhindered. The figure walks past the great sign, armored turrets and fortified gates with ease. Inside the city the figure pauses looks around. The air is clean and the computer-operated systems keep the city maintained and ready. But the mech bays are empty and the star port is quite.
The figure takes a moment and recalls the old days when BattleMech walked the streets, Veritech fighters screamed overhead, and Gears would sit next to Gundams in the repair bays. The bars would be full of warriors swapping stories as the computer systems hummed with inquires and new weapons of war came off the assembly lines.
That is to say the old days where not all Good old days. More than one major war erupted in the City and the resulting flames ended in driving some from the City forever. Once the City was nearly bombed from existence by an unknown enemy. But the city survived as the walls where constructed and weapons where set in place. And so the City thrived for many more years.
Now things are different.
Quite.
Not totally quite of course. A workshop here and there still produces a new mech or weapon and sometimes the database was searched for information. But it all is a faded echo of days past.
Where did the population of this once busy city go? Most moved to a new and different, official city of BattleMechs, though some still hold dual citizenship. Others moved to different cities to pursue different interests. Some just drifted away, never to be heard of again.
Will throngs of people ever return to the City? Will the City loose its last stubborn inhabitants and become a Ghost Town? The future is not yet written, though it does seem bleak.
The figure restarts his trip to his office. There are still a few projects to finish. His steps echo off the buildings and become the tread of mechs long gone. He will not leave the City anytime soon. He likes the old place and the good memories that still linger here. The City is not a Ghost Town yet.
